What we set, and why
Short version: the shop needs two to work, and asks before setting anything else.
Cookies we set to run the shop
These are set without asking, because the shop cannot work without them and they are not used to track you anywhere else.
| Name | What it does | How long |
|---|---|---|
session |
Remembers what is in your basket and keeps the checkout form safe from forgery. | Until you close your browser |
lf_consent |
Remembers the choice you made about analytics, so we stop asking. | One year |
Cookies we set only if you accept
Two things, both Google's. Analytics counts visits and tells us which pages people find useful; it does not tell us who you are. Google Ads tells us whether an advert led to an order, and can mean you are shown our products on other sites afterwards.
| Name | What it does | How long |
|---|---|---|
_ga |
Tells Google Analytics one browser apart from another. | Two years |
_ga_<id> |
Keeps the state of your visit for Google Analytics. | Two years |
_gcl_au |
Lets Google Ads tell whether an advert led to an order. | Three months |
Nothing in this table is set unless you press Accept. Saying no, or closing the banner without choosing, counts as no.
Google's measurement script does load on every page, because Google will not otherwise recognise that the shop is tagged. It arrives switched off: before you choose, it is forbidden from storing anything on your device and can only tell Google that a page was viewed, without identifying you or your browser. Pressing Accept is what lifts that, and is when the cookies above are set.
We also use two typefaces served by Google Fonts, which lets Google see your IP address and set cookies on its own sites when the page loads. Google explains what it keeps in its privacy policy, and you can control the advertising side at My Ad Center.
Paying
Payment is taken by Stripe, on Stripe's own pages. Stripe sets cookies there to process the payment and to spot fraud, which is part of taking a payment safely rather than something we could ask you to opt out of. Stripe explains its own cookies in its cookie policy.
Changing your mind
Use Cookie choices in the footer of any page, at any time. You can also delete cookies in your browser settings, which will make us ask again.
